The Center is one of the first multidisciplinary pain centers founded in Italy on January 1, 1980 at the Department of Neurological Sciences, University of Milano, School of Medicine.
The major goal of the Center is to promote significant advances in pain research and treatment within a multidisciplinary and multimodal treatment approach. Furthermore the Center is committed to building new bridges of understanding and collaboration between clinical practice and research in the pain field.
In 2008, the Center became one the first interdepartmental pain centers in Italy, giving new boost and strength to its activity. Affiliated departments included the Department of Neurological Sciences, the Department of Surgery and the Department of Anaesthesiology & Dermatology, University of Milan.
During the last decades our therapeutic arsenal was considerably enhanced and refined by the introduction of novel therapeutic tools.
New drugs, anaesthesiological procedures, neurostimulation, psychophysiological techniques (eg., cognitive-behavioral therapy, hypnosis) have succeeded in producing better pain control and improved quality of life in chronic pain patients. But particularly our sensitivity towards pain and suffering has dramatically changed in recent years, so the pain has been eventually recognized as a top priority in policy and medical practice.
The Hospital without Pain remains our ultimate goal to pursue.
